Syren Enabled $8M in Cost Savings for a Leading Medical Device Provider
Problem Statement
The client, a leading medical device provider, wanted a more scalable and real-time solution to monitor, manage, and improve asset visibility for high-value medical equipment inside hospitals. Their teams relied on manual updates and disconnected systems, which sometimes made it challenging to quickly locate assets or respond to urgent needs.
A solution that empowered users to interact with data in real time, run simulations, test ideas early, and make smarter decisions without relying on massive support teams or prolonged development cycles.
ChallengesÂ
- Manual tracking processes: Field teams had to manually update the location of medical assets, leaving room for delays and human error.
- Lack of real-time asset visibility: The organization couldn’t always see where critical assets were at any given moment.
- Scalability constraints: As operations expanded, the existing system struggled to keep up with tracking a growing number of devices and asset types.
Solution
To address the visibility and tracking challenges, Syren, as an implementation partner, built and deployed a robust Track & Trace solution tailored for high-value medical equipment inside hospitals.
BLE Beacon Integration with Real-Time Monitoring
Syren set up a processing layer to receive, interpret, and cascade the broadcast signals from the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons via transmitters placed across hospital floors. These broadcast signals were received by the field agent's mobile app and transmitted over the internet to the backend system.
Mobile App Development for Field Agents
A mobile application was developed and deployed for field agents to track equipment in real-time. The app runs in the background, scans for beacon signals via Bluetooth, and periodically sends both the beacon signal and the mobile device’s GPS location to the backend, ensuring near real-time tracking. Additionally, the app allows users to add new asset types directly within the app, giving field agents more control and reducing dependency on IT for everyday updates.
Modular SDKs for Mobile and IoT Integration
To accelerate development and ensure consistency, Syren delivered reusable SDKs, so that developers could plug into different mobile or IoT interfaces. This framework reduced build time and complexity by standardizing how beacon broadcasts were received and processed.
Data Processing & Event Management Infrastructure
Built an ingestion pipeline using Azure services such as Event Hub to process high volumes of real-time beacon data. This pipeline parses and interprets incoming messages, updates the backend database, and makes live asset location data available through a centralized web portal.
Impact
Conclusion
By implementing Syren’s Track & Trace solution, the medical device provider gained a customer-developed mobile app, IoT-enabled beacons, and a robust backend processing pipeline. They now had precise, near real-time visibility into the movement of high-value medical assets across multiple hospitals. The system streamlined medical device location tracking, reduced manual overhead, and enabled agents to act faster and more confidently.
